Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Hellooooo, everybody! I'm Lídice and today I will be reviewing Obsidian, the first book in the Lux series. I must confess I was having a bit of trouble cause I wasn't at all sure which book to review first. I was thinking of Eleanor & Park or maybe Daughter of Smoke and Bone but at the end, I chose Obsidian because, why not? Plus, my blog's name is inspired by Katy's blog's name. No regrets. Katy's an amazing character and so is her blog, so yeah. I read this book a year ago but it's just so cool to get over it. I remember myself wanting to read it since a long time (and I mean it, A LONG TIME) because I read a quote of Daemon's (that sexy alien that drives mad every single girl) but I actually read it when a friend of mine bought the book and shared it with me. After she read it first, of course. Obsidian is a paranormal/Sci-fi book, the type of book that makes you want to finish it quickly just to go all over the beginning to read it again and again... and again. Here's the synopsis: Starting over sucks. When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up. And then he opened his mouth. Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens. The hot alien living next door marks me. You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades. If I don’t kill him first, that is.

As the synopsis says, Obsidian is about this girl named Katy Swartz that lives with her mother, Kellie Swartz, and they both move away to West Virginia (or the land of lost models, as Katy would call it) after her father passes away. Katy has resigned herself to a boring life without Internet access until she meets Dee Black in the supermarket one day. Dee happens to be Daemon’s twin sister, and he’s very damn protecting with her because they both had already lost their other twin brother (Dawson). Daemon doesn’t like humans at all. So when her sister comes to him one day and brings Katy with her, things just go downhill. For Katy. It occurred, Katy founds out that her neighbors aren’t humans, but aliens. Yes, you heard alright. Aliens. Luxens to be specific. Beings of pure light from a galaxy far, far away that has been destroyed by the Arums (aliens of darkness and the Luxens enemies by nature) and now that they don’t have elsewhere to go, our planet was their great get-away from trouble exit. Katy’s relationship with Daemon isn’t as lovely as with Dee’s. At least not at the beginning. However, an accident happens and now that Daemon has marked Katy with his powers, she’s glowing as a Vegas sign and that turns Katy into fresh met for the Arums, who have made their way to Earth. So Daemon and Katy are to stick together until they discover a way to fade Katy’s light. Literally. But in the meanwhile, they both just have to find a way to survive the Arums attacks. If they can survive each other first, of course. HOLY ALIEN BABIES EVERYWHERE! Just the memory of this book makes me want to read it for the second time. Katy is just an easy, reliable character. She's the kind of girl that you will easy encounter at the supermarket or at the bookshop (especially in this last one since she's a reader addict and a blogger as well). The story is seen from her point of view and the way she narrates it is such a cool one. What I liked most of her is that she was such a great kick-ass character. This girl wasn't annoying at all nor stupid, and that was a relief. Applauds to Jenn for that.

And then... then there's Daemon Black. Daemon had a beautiful face, a beautiful body, but a horrible attitude. He was the holy trinity of hot boys. And Katy knew this as well. Daemon is described in such a way that would make you fade. If you have a thing with arrogant, hot, I-know-it-all boy, Daemon is definitely your fictional type of boyfriend. I laughed at almost everything he used to say and I enjoyed watching Katy getting mad at him for stupid reasons. Of course, as the big Luxen I’m, my favorite character was Daemon.

Reading this book was such a pleasure. It always keeps you guessing what is coming next. It’s a page turner book! We see these two characters grow in every single book and so does their relationship. Yes, at first they didn't get along at all, but things change when Daemon, who admits he's been a douchebag with Katy, also admits he has a certain attraction to our main character. But when he finally decides to tell her, she rejects him! WHOA! Point to Katy! I know it sound a bit cheesy and like every other boring, cliché book, BUT IS NOT! I swear this book deserves to be read! It deserves your time! It NEVER gets boring and you will find yourself right in the middle of it when you least think of it. Some of my favorite's scenes were, among a bunch of others I don't recall right now, when Dae and Katy were in the lake, when she goes to the dance and Daemon sees her in her red dress, and of course, THE LABTOP SCENE! That scene was mind blowing! God! Well, to be honest, guys, I don't remember if that scene is actually in this book, but, IT DOESN'T MATTER because that scene was wow! Sexy aliens? Where? I'll take one, please!

Here are some quotes that will definitely make you read not only Obsidian but all the Lux series: “I've always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect." His eyes searched mine intently, and for a moment we stood there, toe to toe. "The ones who throw their beauty around, waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It's just a shell hiding nothing but shadows and emptiness.” “Doesn’t he own a shirt?” I asked, grabbing a spade. “Unfortunately, I don’t think so. Not even in the winter. He’s always running around half-dressed.” She groaned. “It’s disturbing that I have to see so much of his…skin. Yuck.” Yuck for her. And hot damn for me.” “You probably even dream about me.” His gaze lowered to my mouth. I felt my lips part. “I bet you even write my name in your notebooks, over and over again, with a little heart drawn around it.” “I don’t read too much. There’s no such thing as that.” “Stopping by one of the empty tables, I let out a little breath of happiness. I was always able to lose myself in reading. Books were a necessary escape I always gladly jumped into headfirst.” “So, you guys are like us in other, uh, departments?” Daemon sat up, arching a brow. “Come again?” I felt my cheeks flush. “You know, like sex? I mean, you guys are all glowy and stuff. I don’t see how certain stuff would work.” Daemon’s lips curled into a half smile, and that was the only warning he gave. Moving unbelievably fast, I was on my back and he was above me in a flash. “Are you asking if I’m attracted to human girls?” he asked. Dark, wet waves of hair fell forward. Tiny droplets of water fell off the ends, splashing against my cheek. “Or are you asking if I’m attracted to you?” Using his hands, he lowered himself slowly. There wasn’t an inch of space between our bodies. Air fled my lungs at the contact of his body against mine. He was male and ripped in all the places I was soft. Being this close to him was startling, causing an array of sensations to zing through me. I shivered. Not from the cold, but from how warm and wonderful he felt. I could feel every breath he took, and when he shifted his hips, my eyes went wide and I gasped. Oh yeah, certain stuff was definitely working. Daemon rolled off me, onto his back beside me."

Jennifer is one of my favorite authors, she's the type of author you know you can count on with her books. She has great humor and a thing for bad boys and cookies. So if what you're looking for is an entertaining story with arrogates hot guys and female characters that won't tolerate that, Jenn's book are perfectly suitable for you. If you haven’t read Obsidian you must. Obsidian is the type of book that would make a reader out of you. It won't disappoint you.
